History
Cardiff YMCA was formed in 1852 and registered as a Charity on the 30 December 1966. The Charity is governed by its Constitution which was adopted at the National Assembly in Birmingham in 1973, amended on the 24 March 1993 and 1 March 2006.
In 1992 as a result of a Trust Deed, Cardiff YMCAs project providing hostel accommodation became a separate Charity, under title of “Cardiff YMCA Housing Association”. Although both Associations jointly share the premises known as “The Walk” they are separately affiliated to the National Council as independent Bodies; each with their own Operational and Management structures.
Offerings
Cardiff YMCA continues to promote opportunities for children and young people to gain the knowledge, skills and experience to reach their full potential as valued individuals. Programmes are continually under development; which encourage personal development, self awareness and self acceptance as a support to young people in making informed life decisions.
Our work includes both a Young Carers’ Support Project; “Time 4 Me”, and via our Youth and Community Department, a range of issue based informal education programmes and workshops. During 2009 these programmes were delivered to 750+ young people throughout Cardiff, particularly those disadvantaged by learning difficulties; ethnic minority groups; disaffected young people facing exclusion; young carers; young mums; homeless, and young people affected by the criminal justice system.
Our programmes are delivered throughout the City by outreach programmes, in Youth Centres; Schools and Colleges; Alternative Curriculum Education Facilities; at Community First Partnerships; Family Centres and at Statutory and Charitable Organisations.
Additionally, each year we have in excess of 10,000 contacts with Cardiff Young People aged between 7 and 25 years, through a range of YMCA activities, which include Boxing; Theatre; Dancing; Cricket; and Chess.
Located close to Cardiff city centre, and within easy walking distance of Railway station and Bus stops; Cardiff YMCA also has a number of Conference/Meeting rooms, a Gymnasium, and 139 seat Auditorium style Theatre, available for rental.
