History
Mountain Ash YMCA has been in existence since 1935 and has had a chequered history. In the early days the YMCA was housed above a shop in the main street of Mountain Ash. It moved to its present site just before the outbreak of the Second World War. The present building has developed in stages down the years. The most recent development was the renovation of the building, this work brought up the modern standards required to operate a building being accessed by the community.
The building was re-opened in September 1994 by the late President Lord Aberdare and the association has had to re-invent itself with an imaginative programme designed to serve the needs of the local community in the twenty-first century. The association started from nothing to re-build its programme and re-establish its role in the community.
Services & Activities:
- We have developed our Youth Work Provision into one of the best in the Cynon Valley.
- We cater for young homeless people through our Emergency Accommodation Units called ‘Duffryn House’.
- The association has also set up a Young Carers Support Project to cover all of the Cynon Valley.
The YMCA has also further developed its work in Further Education through a variety of popular classes.
The YMCA is used as a meeting place for various groups from the local church group to Career Guidance courses, through to karate, dance, slimming and American Wrestling classes. We are constantly looking to develop our work and build on the projects already in place in order that we serve the community in the most appropriate.
Mountain Ash YMCA is a registered charity working in the Cynon Valley. Our mission is to help and support young people by giving them the opportunity to express themselves and learn and develop good citizenship, the association is dedicated to helping those members of society who are socially disadvantaged. The YMCA has an open door policy which shows no discrimination and welcomes all. We achieve this by running a Youth Club, an Emergency Accommodation Unit, a Young Carers Project and a Central Unit.
Mountain Ash YMCA is an autonomous organisation that is run by a locally elected Board of Management. The association is affiliated to the National Council of YMCA’s of Wales. The YMCA’s day to day activities is run by a Centre Manager and nine permanent members of staff, who are supported by a dedicated group of sessional workers and volunteers
