History
The YMCA has been operating in Port Talbot since 1898 and moved to its present site in the 1940’s. Like most YMCA’s it has a long history of providing a range of activities both sporting and cultural. Port Talbot YMCA was very active in athletics, fencing and tennis. It also ran a number of clubs including photography and chess. There were the very popular dances which took place at the YMCA with the big bands. The other area the YMCA was famous for was the drama club which put on a range of productions over the years and was responsible for introducing Sir Anthony Hopkins to acting. Sir Anthony is now the Patron of Port Talbot YMCA and has kindly donated memorabilia from his film career to the YMCA and can be seen around the building.
Services & Activities:
The YMCA still carries on the tradition of trying to provide as many opportunities to the community as possible. Recently the facilities at the YMCA have been refurbished to provide modern amenities. These include a new look climbing wall, a very popular community café, a fully-fitted multi-gym, the famous stage, the main hall, a soundproofed music room and a range of training and conference rooms. In addition to the main stream community activities Port Talbot YMCA provides hostel accommodation to young men aged 16-25 who find themselves temporarily homeless. The staff provides housing support which encourages the residents to move on to more permanent accommodation. A range of opportunities are available to the residents to encourage them to improve their future prospects.
Port Talbot YMCA has been actively involved in Global Youth Work and has seen its young people take part in campaigns which has taken them to Palestine, Sierra Leone, Prague. Austria and Borneo.
Currently the YMCA has been involved in developing a range of home grown clubs and include and adult and junior climbing clubs, a shooting club, a drama club and a youth club. We work closely with a range of local and national organisations who support the work undertaken at Port Talbot YMCA and include the Community Police, Neath Port Talbot CVS, Rockall, local schools and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme to mention a few.
