The National Council of YMCA's in Wales
Housing and Training Department
YMCA has been at the forefront of tackling homelessness since its formation in 1844, and YMCA Wales had operated a dedicated housing unit for over 15 years. In March 2007 YMCA Wales formed the Housing and Training Department, based at the YMCA Wales headquarters offices in Swansea, with remote offices located in Cardiff, Flint, Mountain Ash and Port Talbot. The department currently works in partnership with the Welsh Assembly Government, Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, the National Probation Service and Flintshire County Council.
The department consists of four core business units:
The Bond and Accommodation Unit currently operates four bond and accommodation schemes across Wales in partnership with the Welsh Assembly Government, Flintshire County Council and the National Probation Service.
The Housing Unit provides advice on housing policy and strategic issues to YMCA Wales and local YMCAs in Wales. The unit also works in partnership with housing associations and local authorities to acquire and directly manage housing stock across Wales.
The Training Unit delivers training and consultancy services on housing, management, welfare benefits/ credits, soft skills, counselling, mediation, drug and alcohol issues, lone worker and breakaway/ self-defence practice and related topics. This unit has been awarded a three-year award by Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs to deliver training to members of the Third Sector across Wales.
The Business Development Unit operates as a think-tank charged with identifying appropriate development opportunities in the housing and training/ consultancy environment in which YMCA Wales operates.
